How to Become a Traveling Nurse

Before joining the ranks of traveling nurses there are certain decisions that have to be made and procedures to follow. The first thing that needs to be done to become a traveling nurse is to get qualified, pass the necessary exams and become a registered nurse. This can be done by studying at college and training in a public hospital to get ready to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. A nurse must then gain experience by working in a hospital for at least one year, in the specialty area of her choice. The more experience she has the more pay she will receive, most employment agencies require at least one year training in a hospital before they will accept a nurses application.

Once you have decided that becoming a traveling nurse is something you want to do, the next step is to find a reputable employment agency that specializes in placing traveling nurses. When searching for a suitable employment agency, a traveling nurse would be well advised to look at what incentives are provided by the various nurse recruitment agencies. These incentives can vary between agencies. Once a nurse is satisfied that the selection of incentives are most suited to her needs, she will have to contact the employment agencies for further details.

It is also a good idea to get in touch with other nurses who have used the employment agency's services in the past. The best way to qualify any company is to obtain references from past and present clients or customers. This will enable a nurse to determine if the company is reputable and trustworthy. This procedure is imperative for a traveling nurse to be able to trust the employment agency that will be marketing her skills to future employers. The company that she chooses will be presenting her qualifications to a range of prospective employers.

When a nurse has narrowed down the agencies, decided on the one that she wishes to join, and her application has been accepted, it is time to browse the available jobs. The advertised positions can be from virtually anywhere in the country. The length of the job will vary with each assignment. She must choose the job that she wants to take carefully, because she will be signing a binding contract.

There are certain factors a traveling nurse has to look at when considering to apply for a position, they are the locality, the length of the assignment, and the type of facility that she will be working in. If one, or more of these conditions is not suitable then it may be in the nurse's best interest to reject the job offer. Once the nurse selects the job that she wants, the agency will help find suitable accommodation and assist with proper licensing requirements that she may need, particularly if she is traveling interstate.

There are times that a nurse will be placed in an ideal location and job setting. Should the facility be happy with her work and she wants to stay on, then there is a chance of getting a full time position. This often works out best for companies looking to replace a full time nurse that has left their employ.

Embarking on a career as a traveling nurse is not something to be decided on at the spur of the moment. There are many aspects involved that may make it an unsuitable career for some. Having to move away from one's family and friends is a difficult decision to make, especially when starting a new job and moving to a new area. A career as a traveling nurse is a fantastic opportunity for single people that love to travel, or even for newlyweds who both have medical qualifications.
