Home Nursing For The Aged

Many aged parents develop a variety of maladies as they grow older and respective their families find it difficult to provide proper care and treatment for them. This, of course, is no fault of the family members, as they may not have the specialized training that is needed to care for elderly persons with degenerative complaints. Children with elderly parents are quite often faced with this dilemma and must decide whether to obtain the services of a registered nurse or have their loved ones moved into a nursing home.

The advantages of moving an incapacitated parent into a nursing home are many, the patient is professionally cared for 24 hours a day, has regular medical checkups and receives up to date treatment that will make their lives as comfortable as possible. A Nursing home will also provide a range of regular activities, tailored to the patients capabilities, to keep residents entertained and alleviate the problems of boredom and depression.

There is just one major downside into moving mom or dad into a nursing home, and that is, parents will feel as though they have lost their independence and their intimacy. Even if they admit themselves to the same facility they will be housed in separate wards, men's and women's. Their only moments together will be during recreational periods, provided one or the other is not bedridden. While the patient's medical, dietary and basic personal needs are adequately catered for, their emotional processes are being severely tested. These two factors alone, loss of independence and loss of intimate contact with one's spouse could exacerbate any maladies that already exist in either party.

Alternatively, a registered nurse could be engaged to call daily at the parents home to check their condition, supervise their therapy and make sure that they receive the correct medication. Should the patient need intensive care with 24 hour support a live in nurse could be engaged, provided that there are suitable accommodation facilities available for the nurse.

Traveling nurses can apply for this type of assignment, either on a short term basis, to relieve a home nurse during her vacation, or for a term of permanent employment. Qualified and experienced nurses who accept these kinds of assignments could end up living in a villa on the Cote d'Azur or a mansion in New England.
